Travel Tips
- Many Southeast Asian countries offer visa on arrival or visa-free entry for most passport holders, but always check current requirements at least a month before your trip.
- Street food is generally safe and incredibly delicious. Look for stalls with high turnover and freshly cooked dishes. Avoid pre-cut fruit from unrefrigerated carts.
- Dress modestly when visiting temples: cover shoulders and knees. Many temples provide sarongs at the entrance, but carrying your own saves time.
- The rainy season (May-October in most areas) brings short, heavy downpours rather than all-day rain. Prices drop significantly and crowds thin out, making it a viable budget option.
- Haggling is expected at markets and with tuk-tuk drivers. Start at about half the asking price and negotiate with a smile. Fixed-price shops and malls are the exception.
- Download Grab (the regional ride-hailing app) before arrival. It works across Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Indonesia for rides and food delivery.
- Carry a reusable water bottle with a filter. Tap water is not potable in most of the region, and you will reduce plastic waste significantly.
- Book domestic flights within the region early on budget carriers like AirAsia, VietJet, and Cebu Pacific for fares as low as $20-50 one way.
